Human Rights and Labor Standards

Our global society is a rich patchwork of different cultures. Although the traditions of these cultures differ, there are a few core principles that are valid everywhere. These are addressed by the first six principles of the UN Global Compact.

10 Principles of the UN Global Compact

Human Rights

Principle 1:
Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and

Principle 2:
make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.

Labor Standards

Principle 3:
Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;

Principle 4:
the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;

Principle 5:
the effective abolition of child labor; and

Principle 6:
the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Progress, Measures and Results


Regular auditing by our customers and independent organizations confirm the effectiveness of our internal business conduct guidelines, binding for all our employees. They are an expression of the corporate culture that we have been living since our very beginnings.

Bringing Suppliers into the Boat

We realize that our challenges lie elsewhere – with a globalized economy, we are involved with suppliers in all parts of the world, including parts where basic values concerning human rights may be sacrificed to economic growth. We’ve received very positive feedback on our efforts to extend our own values to our suppliers – we see the combination of the OSRAM Code of Conduct and auditing as the most effective levers we have for improving respect for the principles above. Therefore, we will continue with this strategy and would like to share some of the progress we’ve achieved.

Improving individual's chances with professional training

Lack of education can increase an individual’s chance of being exploited. While OSRAM can not fundamentally influence the education systems in the regions where we are located, our professional training programs help raise the level of qualification.  It is an example we urge other companies to follow.
